FedEx Ground Unveils New Warehouse in Wayne

Four years after the old Drake’s bakery closed in Wayne, putting 320 people out of work, a new FedEx warehouse has risen on the Demarest Drive site, reflecting the demand for distribution space in North Jersey.

“It doesn’t smell as good as it did when Drake’s bakery was here, but we certainly are very happy that you are here,” Wayne Mayor Christopher Vergano said Wednesday at a ceremony marking the completion of the warehouse’s exterior. He was joined by executives from FedEx and the property’s landlord, the Rockefeller Group of New York City, which bought the site about a year ago. The concrete building was constructed in about six months.

Clark Machemer, a senior vice president at the Rockefeller Group, said that a warehouse was the right fit because the site is close to Route 80, and because of continued high demand for distribution space, as consumers increasingly shop online and expect quick delivery. – Kathleen Lynn, The Record
